Week 2 - 2024
Hello everyone, happy weekend!
Hope you've had a great week. Busy week here at Collie Capers, a few of the lads were in for extra walks which meant extra work for me on the fitness side. I've been pretty exhausted each night after work, had to have a few early nights.
I want to tell you about the fantastic day I had Sunday. The weekend started with a regular morning walk on Saturday and again Sunday with Mum's friend for a wander out along the river towards Windsor and then a nice coffee stop at Boulters Lock. A bit disappointing for me on Sunday, they'd run out of dog treats and Mum did not have any! When we got home there was rugby on the TV, I was all set for an afternoon in front of the box.
I was watching Mum getting ready to go out without me when she said, 'put your kit on then Zac'. I was going out with her to watch the ruby live! We went down to Slough Rugby Club where we were watching the girls play rugby. Oh boy I nearly lost my head when Maidenhead scored! I chased my tail and barked with joy. I met the girls afterwards too and I got huge cuddles, I liked them all.
Back to work Monday, normal team. We headed off to Spade Oak, the Boss seemed to think that the river may have receded from the fields. Wrong! The place was a quagmire, river still very high, quarry lake flooded, we will be giving that place a miss for a few weeks, I think! We ended up wading through freezing cold water right up to our bellies. I was not happy with the boss for taking us that way!
Tuesday the temperatures dropped, and it was a bit chilly for the rest of the week, on Wednesday I even asked if I could put my coat on! Our early morning walks were shivery, all the boys thought so too. Luke even ran back in the house on Wednesday morning straight under his duvet!
It was funny! He did come with us though as you can see!
Rio came out Tuesday mid morning with Poppy and Stan, in general it was a very quiet walk. Everyone was well behaved and no-one wanted to run around much. Poppy was in one of her bullish moods, pushing the boundaries. I had a quiet word with her.
Tuesday afternoon, I saw Tess & Otto for the first time this year. They were so pleased to see the Boss and me, I had a few cuddles from their mum too. We headed off to a new place for an adventure afternoon. We parked up and headed into the woods, the Boss said to stay close as we didn't know the paths. This is quite sensible when you go to a new place, it stops us losing anyone.
Great new place, massive woods, lots of paths leading off up/down right and left with fantastic new smells. Otto put his nose in the air then to the ground and headed off at pace - the Boss shouted his name - he stopped still, looked back, sniffed and off he went! I knew he had picked up deer scent, the Boss knew this too and yelled at him to come back! He did come back as he always obeys the Boss. She had a chat to him and they decided he should stay on his lead as otherwise he'd get lost and none of us knew where we were.
After an hour of exploring, Tess and Murphy went skipping off together, came back covered in mud! They'd only gone and found a huge muddy puddle to play in. Then they found a stream down in the valley so washed the mud off themselves. I didn't go in the mud; I'd had a long day and the thought of being hosed down in the cold was enough to put me off getting too dirty that day. Murphy went home really dirty as did Tess!
Wednesday morning with Luke and John was a jumping session down at the Hayfield. Its great down there we can jump up on the hay bales that have been left for us to play on. There was also a skating rink, which really dogs should avoid running over as all four legs go in different directions as me a Luke found out! John was more sensible.
Sparky was on form Wednesday; he loves coming out with us all and exploring together in the woods. he got a bit stuck in the undergrowth this week and screeched out for help. Couldn't see him at first but then the Boss found him he was crying as his long hair and ear had got wrapped around a thick bramble. It was not easy to get to him, the Boss managed to free him, she got bitten by the bramble through her gloves, she now has a hole in her finger! After he was free Sparky only went and ran back into the gorse bushes!! Sometimes I wonder what that Spaniel is thinking!
Yesterday was the coldest morning, it was -7 down at the river, the sun was still coming up, I've noticed it has gone a bit lazy in the mornings now! Even when we were on the way home at 09:30 it was still below freezing.
The other thing that happened yesterday was Poppy decided to raise the ante and chase Seamus constantly around the fields. Seamus loves the chase game, but sometimes Poppy just doesn't know when to stop! Poor Seamus was exhausted by the end of it all, he was glad to get back to the van to go home! Stan and I don't tend to get involved we just watch them wear themselves out!
Last walk of the day yesterday was up at the Thicket with Murphy, Stan and Scout. We met up with George and his team for a chat and a big play. They're a good bunch of dogs, up for a chase game and a run around. There were 11 of us running and playing together in the woods, of course the younger dogs were boisterous and then Murphy goes that extra mile and gets himself all worked up and over excited again! Me and Harry had to tell him to calm down a couple of times. It was only when the Boss stepped in that he sat down quietly. Sometimes that young lad can be a handful!
Today we went across to Wooburn Green. As it was cold again we played ball to warm up before heading off up into the woods for long walk. It is such fun playing ball out there, big playing fields allow us to run and fetch the ball. We always play with one ball between four of us, first one there is the owner of the ball. The game is to stop the others getting it first, catch it and take it back for the Boss to throw it again. Sometimes she teases us, pretends to go one way then the other and again! Nethy always falls for it and heads off on the first pretend ball. Stan is quite good at watching the ball, Lady is very speedy and quite often gets there first ahead of us all. The trick is to let her get ahead as I know the ball will bounce and I can sweep up the ball, hee hee! Mind you Stan knows this too...!
