Week 1 - 2024 - What a great week
Went back to work on Wednesday 3 January 2024 after a Christmas break.
I'd been ill over the Christmas period with some nasty canine bug. Made me really sick, ending in a visit to a vet in Cheltenham for an anti-sickness jab whilst we were myon a short break in the Cotswolds. I made a good recovery; however, I did embarrass myself by throwing up in the hotel room! Mum cleaned it up and spoke to the hotel staff, who were really caring of me.
By Wednesday I was on top form and ready to get back to work, seeing everyone and having some nice long runarounds.
Luke, John & Jasper were the first crew out for 2024. All the guys were up for a big run out. Lots of excitement when we picked them up - all of them sucking up to the boss with big hugs and cuddles!
We went off down to the woods near the river, lots of sticks had fallen out of the sky the day before, it was heaven. John and Jasper were running around like mad things with sticks in their mouths. Luke is young and gets a bit worried when us older boys run at each other barking and shouting, he normally goes to hide near the boss.
Next up was Nethy and Sparky, a visit to the woods near their houses. More excitement when they saw the boss, more sucking up and cuddles. You know, anyone would think we'd been away for months! Nethy is a foxy lady and annoying too!
Each morning the Boss listens to Virgin radio, the guy who lives in Marlow down the road and his sidekick who makes us all laugh. This day, they kept saying it wasn't going to rain that day.... OMG were they wrong! We got caught in a monsoon of rain! Had to hide under the bushes whilst it passed over us. After that it was a sunny afternoon.
Finally, we picked up Seamus and Stan and headed off to the hayfield for some fun on the hay bales and a stomp down the river. Stan kept tight to the Boss all walk; I think he'd really missed us!
Thursday morning was same crowd as Wednesday, then I had a few hours off as the Cookham crowd were picked up and they all headed off without me! Too many dogs if I go along. It was a good job I'd taken the earlier opportunity to roll in fox poo!!!
On Thursday’s I delegate the fitness session to Scout as she's the only one who loves to run around all the time. Rio, Poppy and Seamus like to have a chat and a sniff more than a big chase. I did hear later that Rio had rolled in something aromatic and wonderful as well! The Boss does not appreciate our pungent smells when we roll.
Friday was a good day, the earlier storm had caused the river to flood some of the fields we use for walks, so we headed off to pick up Lady on Cookham Bridge, then went to meet the Boss' friend for a big walk down the Jubilee River. Afterwards we all went for a coffee then home for the weekend.
Then there were the floods!
Cookham was cut off, the river had overflowed in lots of places, field walking in the valley was not much of an option.
We cancelled Lady and Rio as we could not get to them easily.
Monday morning it all went pear-shaped. We picked up Jasper and went to find some walks, we went one way, floods, we went the other way, flooding, we went round in circles! We managed a weird walk which included a wander on the path that runs alongside the M4! Not for me thanks Boss!
After seeing Stan and Nethy for a walk in the muddy woods, it was the end of the day. At home the River Thames was now paying a visit to our neighbours back garden which raised stress levels at home! Thankfully the water stayed out of our house and eventually started to recede enough to stop panicking.
We cancelled the Tuesday afternoon walk with Tess & Otto and Murphy due to the panic that was going on at home and the lack of safe walking. I love this group - always great fun. Tess thinks she's my girlfriend...... always trying to kiss me! Murphy can be a liability near water and Otto is a deer stalker! I'll catch up with them next week.
Tuesday morning, the Boss noticed that there was a big hole in one of the tyres on the van. We think it was when we hit a pothole we didn't see on Monday. That needed to be sorted after the walk with Poppy and Stan. We all had to stay in the van whilst they changed the tyre. It was boring for us. Not sure Stan liked the wheel machine much.
The other thing that happened on Tuesday was a funny noise coming from the heating system and water pouring out of header tank overflow (I heard the Boss tell someone that!). That was another unwanted issue. Thankfully a man turned up Wednesday morning and resolved it all.
Wednesday was uneventful by comparison, so we had a quiet evening and early night!
Thursday, we still couldn’t get to Rio so haven’t seen him this week. We did take Scout out as she had been a bit restricted on walks due to the flooding around her house. We also managed to take Murphy for a walk and keep him out of the river! He met Scout for the first time, the good news is that she loved playing with him.
Friday, big walk around the woods and home for the weekend.
Here's Stan
Stan would like to be a super model, he's always well turned out, brushed silky coat and heads off for a pamper most Saturdays. He's a bit of a lady's man. Do anything for a treat he will.
Stan comes out with us everyday. He's with different teams each day, he's a good lad, not a very fast runner and sometimes lacking in Collie common sense! For a Collie anyway! Stan likes to sniff anything and everything, can be a little silly at times when we meet dogs out and about. I normally have a word in his ear before he does anything too daft, he does listen most of the time.
Stan loves coming out on adventures, he doesn't like heights much and is always cautious when we're climbing and jumping over things. Sometimes he just watches everyone else and only joins in when the treat game starts!

See you next Friday, have a great weekend
