Weekly Woofs 8: The Border Collie Diaries

Updated: Mar 1

Another wet week, when will it end?

I'm looking forward to watching rugby today on the TV. Rugby days are exciting for me, I get to jump around in front of the TV when a try is scored and block everyone's view in my excitement!

This week we had a few little incidents.

Monday was an eventful start to the week, John and Luke first up down the hayfield for a big chase. Today we had a real long game of chase, even Luke joined in. It was great getting covered in mud and rolling around in the wet grass! If you haven't tried it, you should have a go!

Then it was time for Collie Monday, the river had flooded everywhere near Lady's house, so we headed to Farm Woods. A trudge up the muddy hill to get into the woods but then it's definitely a bit dryer in there, unless you are Stan or Nethy who love to wade through the muddiest dirtiest puddles we can find!

Stan got himself on the boss' watch list from the start of the walk, it was his own fault! After leads off, Stan was in a world of his own and for some daft reason started to wander back through the gate and down the carpark! He got told off as there are moving cars in the carpark.

Next up he started sniffing the air and off he ran straight towards a lovely little Vizsla on heat. He was persistent! I had a bit of a sniff too. You can't help it you know! The boss had to pull Stan away, we were all laughing! As we got to the gate into the woods, off he went again!

Next thing we know he' ran at an Alsatian puppy (who was a lot bigger than him) and started having a go! At that point the boss called him back and he had a sit down chat, he'd be on the lead if he didn't calm down and listen. He was good for the rest of the walk. No one likes a sit down talk from the boss, it's embarrassing!

Nethy went over and told him not to worry and come find a puddle, yes of course they did!

First stop, poo bin. Then we had a short game of ball in the small field to warm us up. We moved on to a big walk around the perimeter on a few new paths. Quite a few trees had come down in the winds making it all an obstacle course for us, jumping up and over and walking around through the mud made it fun.

I think even the boss secretly enjoyed it!

On the way back up the hill we took a small path, a big yelp from Stan! He'd walked into a branch that was sticking out and hurt himself, big cuddles from the boss sorted it all out. Mind you he did milk it for a few treats!

After about an hour the boss said 'let's walk down to the park for some ball games'. The words we had all been waiting for! We all ran down the big muddy hill, the boss slipped, but recovered well! It was funny, we all laughed!

We got the balls out and played until we dropped! Then we had water and the boss said 'back to the van guys'. The boss picked up the bag we'd left on the bench and then we could see she was looking for something.......! The boss had only gone and misplaced our leads!

Four Collies no leads! How did she manage that? She was not impressed with herself.

I said, we'd best go back and find them, they must be on the bench where we played ball. The boss said we'd have to go back up and look around. She headed off at speed. We all looked at each other wide eyed, she wants to go back up! It's a long hike up there after walking and playing ball you know. We all followed like good boys and girls, she kept telling us to keep up. You know she practically ran up that hill with no thought for us having run around a lot, for 90 minutes already! 40 minutes later and no sign of the leads. One very annoyed Boss for the rest of the day.

We took Hank out on his afternoon walk, he was on best behaviour today and got to have a run and chase with me until he decided not to return to the whistle. Lead on for rest of walk! Ooops! I did have a quiet word, told him, always come back, take the treat and you can keep running free! It's easy!

Tuesday came around, the Boss decided that we would go back to Farm Woods for a couple of hours and search for the leads with Murphy, Tess & Otto. We did the whole woods twice and found nothing, no clues, no smells and no leads! The team had never been to Farm Woods before so that was very exciting for them all. Murphy and Tess found the same muddy puddles as Stan and Nethy! Different dogs, same outcome!

Whilst the weather had been damp on Monday and Tuesday it hadn't really poured down. That all changed on Wednesday! OMG it poured all day long, constantly.

Stan and I wore our coats, very sensible we were. Poor Scout got cold and shivery, the boss had to cuddle her in a towel to warm her up. Seamus had a blast, running around with Scout through the water, even lying in the cold water at one point!

Wednesday morning, we picked Nethy up, her mum told the boss that Nethy had only had a short walk on Tuesday as her mum had been a bit poorly. The boss got back in the van and turned to me and said "we are in for some trouble, Nethy had a quiet day yesterday!" Well, she was right - it was great fun!

Nethy was bouncing, it was pouring down from the sky, we headed into the woods under the canopy. Sparky was in his element, deer scents, fox scents, he ran around like a mad man! We came across a den that had been made in the middle of the woods. There was a covered den with lanterns and three swings to play on. Of course, Nethy spotted the 'sticks' hanging down and before we knew it, she was a mad Collie!

You'll find some clips on Tik Tok and Instagram but here is one for you to laugh at!

Here is the star of Wednesday with a very large stick that caused a few hiccups for her!

Nethy and Sparky were bouncing all walk, they had great fun.

I was quite wet by this stage and was starting to find the weather a bit too much. I told the boss, who just responded that I'd have to get on with it! Charming!

I was glad to have a shower and curl up after work. Didn't move until bed time!

Thursday, we had a very early walk with Jasper, John and Luke down the river. It didn't rain but boy was everything wet and muddy! I had the rest of the day off as Mum was picking up my Nana from the airport. Did I tell you she went to Australia to see my Aunty Nicola? I was so excited that Nana was coming home, then Mum said "Sorry Zac you have to wait here for Nana, no dogs allowed at the airport! Silly rule!"

I spent all day cuddling up to Nana as I'd missed her a lot. Apparently, she had cuddles with my cousin Echo in Australia so that made me feel better!

Nana left to go to her house on Friday morning early, then I went to work.

We took Jasper out first up, he had a naughty streak in him today! Great fun running, he ate a lot of greens today! He said he needed them! Who knows! He did do something a bit bad, on our way back we crossed over at the entrance to the Olympic Lake at Dorney, always on leads as there are cars passing. When Jasper had been released, he play bowed and then ran back and into the Lake grounds - he clearly thought it was funny and kept going! I looked at the boss, she looked at me! Good job there was no cars coming as he wouldn't come back.

No dogs off lead are allowed in the Lake grounds, Jasper said he didn't care!

As he had his ears forward the boss told me to walk on otherwise, he'd get worse. We walked on, he did follow, but he knew he was in trouble, so he kept well away from me and the boss! Sometimes he pushes his luck.

To my surprise the boss completely ignored him and took a call but kept walking. By this time Jasper was right behind us anyway. The call was from Bertie and Immie, we were about to bump into them. We did! It was great to see them as I we've missed them so far this year.

By this time Jasper had forgotten he was in trouble! The boss hadn't, lol!

Once we'd said goodbye to Bertie and Immie, the boss put Jasper on his lead all the way back to the van. I was chuckling! Then she put mine on too! Only to make Jasper feel better though!

Last up this week was Collie Friday. It was a disaster, the police had closed the road and wouldn't let us through to fetch lady. Unfortunately we couldn't get there! Poor Lady she was waiting for us at the door when the boss spoke to her mum to explain. I hope she got over it quickly and someone took her out for a walk and run.

We all headed to the National Trust at Pinkneys Green as it was the nearest place.

Now I'm taking Mum out for her small run, then I'll be settling down for the rugby just after lunch. My team are playing first up - Wales. Mum says it will be a tough day at the office for the boys - they are playing Ireland! I will be cheering every try regardless! That is what Collies do!

Have a great weekend everyone! Don't forget to follow us on our social media, the more the merrier.

Love Zac x
